Types of Reflections

Specular Reflection

Specular reflection occurs when ultrasound wave strikes a smooth boundary between two media. A portion of the sound wave is reflected in one direction and in an organized manner. The diaphragm, liver capsule and gallbladder walls are the examples of specular reflectors.

The limitation of specular reflection is that if the sound wave is slightly off axis or not striking the reflector at 90˚ angle, it will be reflected in different direction and the reflection does not return to the transducer.

A boundary is considered smooth when irregularities in the surface of boundary are larger than the wavelength of the incident ultrasound wave.
